Beyond Diani: Why Kilifi and Watamu Are the New Domestic Travel Favorites

Ask any Nairobian where they're heading for a beach trip and the answer is almost always the same: Diani. And yes, Diani is beautiful — nobody is arguing that. But it's also crowded, increasingly expensive, and honestly, a bit predictable. Meanwhile, two towns further up the coast are quietly becoming the smarter choice for Kenyan travelers who've been there, done that.

Kilifi: The Chill Alternative Nobody Talks About Enough

Kilifi sits about 60km north of Mombasa and has a completely different vibe from the south coast. There's no hawker hustle on the beach. The creek is stunning — genuinely one of the most beautiful waterways on the Kenyan coast — and you can kayak, paddleboard, or simply sit and watch dhows drift by.

Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses at Ksh 2,500/night to boutique stays around Ksh 8,000. There's a growing food scene too, with local spots serving fresh seafood at prices that don't assume you're a tourist. The Kilifi Creek bridge view at sunset is the kind of thing you take a photo of and people think you paid to go somewhere far away.

Watamu: The Marine Park You've Been Sleeping On

Watamu beach

Watamu sits next to a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve and the Watamu Marine National Park — meaning the snorkelling here isn't just good, it's genuinely world-class. Turtles nest on the beaches. The water is that improbable shade of blue-green that makes your phone camera look like it's been edited.

What makes Watamu work for domestic travelers specifically is that it's not overrun. You can still find a beach banda under Ksh 3,000 a night, walk to the beach in two minutes, and have a nyama choma dinner with the sound of the ocean in the background.

How to Get There Without Spending a Fortune

  • Kilifi: Bus from Nairobi (Mash, Modern Coast) to Mombasa from Ksh 1,000, then a matatu to Kilifi for about Ksh 150.
  • Watamu: Same bus to Mombasa, then matatu or shuttle to Malindi, drop-off at Watamu junction — Ksh 300–500 from Mombasa.
  • Flying? Malindi Airport is 20 minutes from Watamu. Domestic flights start around Ksh 6,000–8,000 one-way.
Emquest Tip If you're going as a group of 4+, splitting a hire car from Mombasa often works out cheaper than individual matatu rides — and you get to stop for mabuyu along the way.

Diani will always be there. But if you want the coast without the crowds, the noise, or the bill that follows — point the car north. Kilifi and Watamu are waiting, and they haven't been discovered by everyone just yet.
